How difficult is this commute?? The Putnam region of the Taconic makes me very nervous to drive through particularly at night.. I'm trying to figure out if this is a commute that I could stomach on a daily basis as I'm sure many people do.

Personally I'd hate it, I'm not fond of the Taconic, especially at night...in fact I go out of my way to avoid it. Generally I prefer i84-i684 (I live up in Wappingers and drive to Port Chester daily).

In broad daylight, that road is trouble. Honestly, I wouldn't...

Totally. The Taconic is the pits. I spent several years commuting down 684 and always listened to the traffic reports and it seemed like there was always an issue on the Taconic. I think the section that goes through Putnam is easier to drive than the part through Westchester. I second the suggestion of 84 to 684 especially if you're leaving early.

I share your concerns - I am not a fan of the Taconic south of about Rhinebeck and would not want to travel that stretch on a daily basis. 684 is not bad to deal with though.

The Taconic USED to be a decent road to travel. But with people thinking they can out drive their guardian angel? I'd avoid it at all costs. It's now used for people who think it's OK to break the speed limits to get to work. (I dispatch school buses here and won't let my drivers drive it).

The area of the Taconic State Parkway north of the Route 6 exit in Yorktown Heights used to be continuously rated one of the most dangerous roads in NY State. Exits aren't numbered ( although they are changing that), exits that are similar to 4 way intersections, no lights...very dangerous

And let's not forget when it snows...

I would be considered a confident driver. Spent some time in NYC driving a police car and the Taconic in some sections scares the hell out of me. People drive like maniacs on that road.

I enjoy taking Taconic every now and then for pleasure. If you like adrenaline rush you may try riding it every day. If you go for it, make sure you drive a big vehicle not a small one.

I just had to take the Taconic because of all the traffic on 684 today. People doing 75 in the narrow sections, where it pretty much curves 270 degrees, tightly, damn. In SUVs too, I don't even want to do that in my Mazda. Now I remember why I hate it.
