I wouldn’t necessarily “rely” on it, but it an option.

Port Kent is more of a tourist ferry, takes over an hour to cross the lake, as opposed to the Essex and Plattsburgh ferries, which only take about 15-20 minutes to cross.

Then, there’s this option further south: Charlotte, VT – Essex, NY Ferry Crossing Rates & Restrictions

Or even further south: Home

The Fort Ti ferry is seasonal and the Charlotte/Essex ferry can be unreliable in the winter...they sometimes have to shut down to too much ice. Regarding a bridge, lets also remember that the ferry company would probably fight any type of bridge that would cross the lake..the most logical place for the bridge would be where the ferry runs!

Interesting discussion. My partner and I spent the summer in Plattsburgh in 2016 to 'test' it out as a possible retirement destination. Our impression was that it has so much untapped potential- primarily due to its location. Where else are you a one hour drive from Montreal (second largest French speaking city in the world), Lake Placid and Burlington VT. Amazing location. The town itself is fine, rather unremarkable in many ways. Despite having SUNY Plattsburgh there, it did not have the feel of a typical college town. SUNY campus is bland and visually unappealing. The older housing stock between the campus and downtown is shabby and run down and obviously the result of absentee landlords packing in students. The most amazing thing to us is the seemingly total disregard for the fact that Quebec is less than 25 miles away and Montreal is an hour away. Yes, there are some bi-lingual street signs but the impression we got from talking to numerous folks and visiting many retail and hospitality spots was that they were indifferent to the French speaking population just over the border. No one at any bar or restaurant even know how to say 'Bon Jour" to visiting Quebeckers. Contrast this with Burlington where they have an initiative to teach the hospitality staff some basic Quebec French as a means of hospitality to their Quebec visitors. Interesting how we expect Quebeckers to speak English to us as we cross the border into their province where the official language is French but when they cross into Plattsburgh, no one thinks of greeting them in French. And this is from a town that calls itself "Montreal's United States suburb". So much possibility there to reach out to a huge metro area just an hour away. Major untapped resource just waiting for someone to take the initiative.
All that said, we enjoyed our summer in Plattsburgh but left feeling like they 'just didn't get it'.

This is interesting, given that the companies investing in the area are based in Quebec, many from that province use the airport, shop there and the local Chamber of Commerce advertises the area as being “Montreal’s US suburb”: North Country Chamber-Home

Thumbs down Horrible

The answer to this?
NO. Absolutely not.
DO NOT be fooled by its sometimes-beauty. The downtown area of Plattsburgh is absolutely miserable, and the culture of people up there are pathetic. That's just honesty: people up there are quarrelsome, petty, and rude and women are insecure and jealous. The women are the worst: they LOVE vicious rumors, and are cliquish. Good luck finding a job because a few local families hoard all the good jobs. These families stay in the area because they are so low on the manners totem pole that they'd never make it anywhere else. Please don't make a serious mistake in moving here: it's like the old Chevy Chase movie Funny Farm mixed with the movie Fargo (except life here is just not funny - it's terrible). Rudest people in America. Racist beyond words, as well, and they HATE outsiders. Save your time and money and invest your lives somewhere else.
