I attended a wedding in the Geneva area this past weekend, stayed in a local B&B and picknicked in Seneca Lake State Park, wound up walking back to the B&B from the picnic across the end of the lake and through downtown and neighborhoods.

Honestly, 20 years ago I remember thinking this community was basically the armpit of the Finger Lakes, despite its location on one of the two largest lakes, and hosting Hobart/William Smith colleges and much of Cornell's agricultural research.

What I found on this trip, while the retail wasn't big enough to fill the remaining downtown, the offices that did occupy the remaining storefronts felt more like placeholders for future retail. I was told that Linden Street went from empty to full in the last 10 years.

I saw the tell-tale signs of grant funded projects on the waterfront and downtown but, amazingly, they about all fit together. Neighborhood signage throughout the city, not just in a favored block or two, is a nice touch.

Unlike many Upstate cities, the folks I saw weren't all white/rich and other colors/poor looking. Seems to look more like America.

While there were a couple of off notes (the pedestrian tunnel under 5&20, while graffiti free, dumped me into a gravel lot connecting to a sidewalk-free street passing the newer-looking one-story building hosting the unemployment office, where it would seem a higher and better use to have townhome condos here playing off the rare-for-this-far upstate row homes nearby), the town left me thinking I wished I had capital to invest. There will be more upside possible here, than in Corning or Ithaca.

I've been trying to tell people about Geneva. It is a surprisingly diverse(for those that don't know) small city of about 13,000 with beautiful scenery and ridiculous potential to be a smaller and perhaps more "regular"(for lack of a better word) version of Ithaca. It already has a college and its schools are very culturally diverse while improving in recent years.

It is also not too common to find small Upstate cities with Soul Food, Hispanic Caribbean and other restaurants. Belhurst Castle is quite nice as well.

I dare say that if Geneva was closer to say Syracuse or Rochester, it would be more popular than it currently is. Perhaps if a younger person were to get a job at say ITT in Seneca Falls, an area college, the casino/resort or a nearby company, it may be a nice option for those that don't mind a smaller city.

I found out it's only 35 minutes to the Apple store (Eastview), which is actually in the same county. That's closer than at home for me. And it has https://www.wegmans.com/stores/geneva-ny.html

https://nysaes.cals.cornell.edu/ should offer potential for spinoff development. William Smith, who donated funds for the eponymous college, made his money in wholesale nurseries. Climate change should favor a rebirth of the WNY fruit belt, and locavore tendencies should create a market. Open land and technical skills in the area might prime the locale for expansion/spinoff from the Canadian greenhouse industry centred less than a day's drive away.

With respect to ITT/Xylem in Seneca Falls, it seems NY's lunch is getting eaten by Wisconsin as a center for such technology. Wisconsin Northeast Ohio (Ashland, Mansfield, and nearby) is also a common location for suppliers of those types of pumps.

Good points and I forgot that Eastview is actually in Ontario County, which is the same county Geneva is in(as you know) This isn't even considering Waterloo Premium Outlets nearby as another shopping option.

I think some other companies like Parker Hannifan in Clyde, Constellation Brands in Canadaigua and Cadbury in Williamson are a few others within a reasonable drive as well. BonaDent in Seneca Falls is another one nearby.

Lots of good comments on Geneva,NY. I'm a county over in Yates but spend a lot of time in Ontario County, Geneva, Canandaigua, etc. I'm only here mainly in the summer but the area is on the rebound. Hobart WM Colleges have always been an anchor for Geneva. The area is flat out beautiful. The local shopping with Wegmans, Walmart, BJ's is adequate for most. You can travel to Canandaigua , Victor , an Outlet Mall & Casino for more options. If you want quaint with a heartbeat it's a nice choice.

20 years ago Geneva was in major trouble. Even 10 years ago Geneva was nothing to stop and walk around. Sure the lake was there, but the downtown sucked. It was pretty vacant.

In the last 10 years, downtown has come a long way. There have been several people who moved in who have really kicked the revitalization process into high gear. Empty storefronts are rare now......most that are empty are in the process of being rented or are being renovated. There's only a handful left that haven't been renovated. They needed to be renovated because they sat vacant rotting for 20, 30+ years.

Linden street went from a handful of businesses to fully renovated in just a few years. It wasn't 10 years. In 2 years alone, they renovated several buildings including the storefronts and apartments above. Every building on Linden street has been renovated. One is still in the process or being rebuilt...literally.

Geneva actually has 3 colleges - Hobart, William Smith, and FLCC. Hobart and William Smith are separate colleges, but share administration and campuses....it's a strange arrangement. FLCC has a major satellite campus in Geneva including the viticulture center (wine making) and a brand new campus.

I agree that if Geneva was closer to a large city that it would be packed. It would be much more like Canandaigua or Skaneateles. Both of them are heavily fed by the local large cities - Rochester for Canandaigua and Syracuse for Skaneateles.

Yes, Geneva is a sleeper. Cute, diverse place. Just a little isolated.
