This story is based on the US Census, not estimates. You see you are part of the problem, burying your head in the sand as people continue to move away due to the high COL and unfriendly business atmosphere. It's people like yourself that tell me I made the right decision by leaving NY myself, a state I lived in and grew up in for over 40 years....
No, any information before the official 2020 census is an estimate, as the same things were said before the 2010 census and the information ended up being overestimated in terms of population losses or there were actually population gains in some instances. With said, I'm not going to hijack this thread with the same tired people are leaving posts, as that isn't the topic for this thread.

OP, there are multiple places in Upstate where your skills could be put to use. There are multiple resorts, businesses and facilities that have or may have open positions. Cost of living will also be lower. https://www.bea.gov/iTable/iTable.cf...29=104&7090=70

Take a few trips to the Capital area and see if it's a place you could see yourself living. Albany, Troy, Clifton Park, Saratoga all could be good contenders. The most important thing is finding work. As a hair stylist, you should be able to find a job no problem as that's always a necessity no matter what the economy or area is.

As far as massage therapy is concerned, this seems to be an in demand service as well up there. I've been to massage therapists in both small towns and large cities upstate. I know the owner of Bodywork Professionals. They have locations in both Latham and Saratoga. The Saratoga location is really nice, just off of the main drag. Not sure if they're hiring or not but I know one of the two locations is fairly new (I think it's the Latham one.) Here is their website: Bodywork Professionals Massage Therapist, Albany & Saratoga Springs NY.

Cost of living obviously varies, but safe and affordable areas include Cohoes, Watervliet, Menands, Clifton Park, Glens Falls, South Glens Falls, and Queensbury. Even Amsterdam isn't that bad and has a ton of rural, laid back areas.

I think you have the cart before the horse.
What's are the job opportunities for each of you, are they even in the same location?
What is your budget?
How much do you have saved?
How often would you have to return to the city?
How much rent can you afford?
Are you looking to buy?
Which towns have high property taxes, etc ?
Do you handle winter well? Do you want to live in a snow belt / lake effect area?
Have you ever lived or spent an extended amount of time upstate or just hiked and vacationed?
How rural, suburban, commuter neighborhood can you stand?
E.g. What does it mean when someone from Schenectady says "that's in the sticks"?

Just a couple of thought.
