I’m planning on taking Amtrak to take a week long tour (with the weekends at both ends) of the state and getting on and off the train. I will not be using a car at all and I’m trying to decide if we’re bringing bikes with us.

I’d like general recommendations to fill the itinerary, but I’d also like some advice on great lake beaches within reach of these amtrak stations that will not require a car, preferably allowing for a dip in the waters. Is Buffalo the only station where this is possible?

Rochester has these beaches: https://www2.monroecounty.gov/parks-ontariobeach.php

City of Rochester | Durand Eastman Beach

Dunkirk has a couple of beaches, but I believe that you would have to take a bus from Buffalo in order to get there: Point Gratiot Park

Wright Park

More: Chautauqua Lake and Lake Erie Beaches and Parks | TourChautauqua.com

I would possibly bring bikes.

Also, it doesn’t have a beach, but there is is a bus that goes from the Transportation Center in Syracuse to Oswego. Great sunsets there. You could go by the SUNY Oswego campus to these places to see what I mean: Rudy's Lakeside Drive-in

You could get close to the shore. If you bike down Route 104/104 A west, you could go to this beach: https://parks.ny.gov/parks/12/hunting.aspx

Fair Haven Area Chamber of Commerce. Discover Lake Ontario's Best Kept Secret.

Near the Plattsburgh station maybe? I don't know of any specific beaches but there has to be at least one up there. There's also Saratoga Lake in Saratoga Springs.

I thought about that, but I think he wants a Great Lake beach.

Plattsburgh does have a city beach though: Plattsburgh, NY

Definitely Ontario Beach in Charlotte (Rochester) 7 miles from downtown. Once you're there, there are over a dozen bars, restaurants. Grab a frozen custard at Abbotts and wall the pier. You may want to ride your bicycles along the Riverwalk boardwalk along the Genesee River.

Is this a 7 mile ride from the Amtrak station? Is there a clear route there?

In terms of potential biking, this trail starts in Oswego and goes east near the shore of Lake Ontario: https://bikenewengland.com/2012/04/3...-seaway-trail/

Some beaches nearby: Mexico Point State Park

https://parks.ny.gov/parks/84/hunting.aspx

https://parks.ny.gov/parks/153/details.aspx

All of them are in Oswego County up to about Pulaski/Sandy Creek.

Yes, 7 miles. Take Lake Ave. St Paul will get you there too. On the west side there are trails that are great if you bring your bike. Start at the north end of the cemetery and ride right to the beach.
