This was one of the most annoying things about living in Austin, TX. They charge you for plastic bags and you have to reuse the bags you buy if you don't want to pay the fee. Problem is the bags get sticky from condensation on the foods you buy and reusing them is just a pain. I suppose I would have gotten in the routine of remembering to bring the bags with me, but it's just a hassle.
I'm probably the least environmentally-conscious person you'll ever meet.

Or just get it all delivered? Funky diesel truck idling in the driveway while the driver figures out whether the bag of frozen peas or can of peas is yours.
I started using my own bags about 10 years ago. I prefer it now. When I get home I don't have to throw the thousandth bag of the year away.
Reusable bags spread disease? A lot less than humans. If this your problem, move to the middle of nowhere. The guy next to you in line spitting on you as he babbles on his phone is far more likely to give you a disease than some old crumbs or condensation from a bag of the jolly green giants's broccoli.
Also, clean your bag, you damn slobs. Mine is cotton net. I throw it in the wash once every six months.
Keep dumb California ideas in California. And remember, reusable bags spread disease.
LOL I agree. Sadly, though, they're coming to NY. The NY ban bag (for all but SNAP recipients) will take effect next March.
You're right about these bags spreading disease--and that's just the bacteria lurking inside. The bottoms, thrown into carts harboring kids with diarrhea diapers and E. Coli hands, are another breeding ground for bacteria. Anyone who doesn't think so, is uninformed. (Google is your friend).
We all know what material the vast majority of these bags being used are made of, because we can see them in the stores. And no one is tossing those bags in the washer, or even wiping them down after each use.
Hence, the ensuing E.Coli/listeria/salmonella cases at the ER. And, yeah, just as I always said, those who claim they're laundering their bags after each use....they're lying:

First we did away with the brown bags to save the trees - now we do away with plastic bags to save the environment but bring back those brown bags - letting the trees die and paying 5 cents for that privilege - which does not go into the store's pockets to recoup the cost of the bags but to the New York's Environmental Protection Fund. So groceries will go up - the cost of reusable bags will go up - and the people of NY lose once again.
