I agree, however these entitlements are a significant percentage of any States budget and competition should be used to try to reign in these expenditures by a free market of bids from the private sector. I know some things have been privatized but no public employment dollars have been cut. They closed many facilities in the Hudson Valley while increasing the budget. No one was let go, none of the buildings were sold. They even gave some facilities to religious organizations that could have helped some small town's tax bases. The only thing residents can do is leave where they will ultimately unknowingly vote in the same issues they left because of.

Simple math

Decreasing population + increased spending = higher taxes and fees

NY’s population isn’t decreasing though. It is just slow growth due to births and immigrants, even in spite of domestic migration figures. https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/NY

I stand corrected, NY is gaining population slower than other states. Its 33rd out of 51 including D.C.

The only important part of census facts are the details that may be considered racist to talk about. What demographic is leaving and what demographic is coming?

Alaska is 2nd and over $2500 less. NJ is 3rd and over $3K less. You can't tell me that NY needs to spend 20-50% more than everywhere else.

It's bc every town thinks they need a school even if the population is low. Hello, you don't need a high school for 200 students. NY has the lowest teacher/student ratio. Increase the ratio, combine some schools and quit gouging the taxpayers.

Look, some of these schools have a 10:1 ratio, that's ridiculous.

Those ratios include all of the extra instructional staff, not just in the classroom. Basically the ratio is total students:total teaching staff. Have an assistant dance instructor? That counts as one of the teachers.

I know schools in Florida (a state not known for great education) which have less kids per class in the same grade than on LI. And they spend half as much. And their test scores are on par.

Teacher requirements are likely a factor in terms of the spending difference.
