While poring over a thread on the Ohio forum in which folks were arguing over whether Cincinatti or Cleveland was "better," I came across a reply with a helpful link that extrapolated upon U.S. Census Bureau patterns and projections to prognosticate what the population of all United States metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). Here are the results for New York.
That seems too far ahead to make projections. The losses all seem too large as do the gains. I don't see Rochester or Buffalo losing that much population, and I don't see NYC and Poughkeepsie gaining that much.
I agree that it seems too far ahead. We don't know what will change in 20 years. Then again, in NYS government not much ever does. The new boss is always the same as the old boss.
