Looking for day trip, possibly overnight, ideas for summer in Dutchess County, or driveable from southern Dutchess. Kids are getting older so zoo and toddler stuff won’t do anymore. One in High school, one in middle, one in elementary. Ideas please - thanks.
A lot of the activities in the area are based in Rhinebeck. My kids always liked walking around Rhinebeck for the food and shopping.
The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome has the vintage cars and planes museum and on weekends does the vintage planes air show with classic open cockpit biplanes and triplanes. You can even book a flight in an open cockpit plane.
The Dutchess County Hot Air Balloon Festival is in mid-July at the fairgrounds. Another personal favorite to visit when the balloons get fired up in the dark. You can also book a ride in a balloon as well. Wife and I have done that and it's an awesome experience
The Dutchess County Fair is in mid-August. We like it because it's bigger than our Columbia County Fair but smaller than the NY State Fair.
I would also suggest lunch at the Culinary Institute. The grounds are beautiful, food is amazing and it's easier to get lunch than dinner.
There are tours of a few of the mansions and there are art museums a little further away, such as Olana in Columbia County and the Rockwell in Stockbridge MA. My kids all loved museums and art, but the age range is less than 5 years for all 3 of my offspring.
Agree about the Aerodrome and wandering Rhinebeck.
Check the schedules at Bardavon/UPAC for family friendly shows.
Ride/walk the Walkway over the Hudson
Visit the mansions - Mills, Wilderstein, Clermont. Clermont used to do a period 4th of July celebration with fireworks - not sure if they still do but it was fun.
Hike at Mohonk, get lunch/walk around in New Paltz afterward
Tubing the Esopus in Phoenicia. Or rail biking there as well - which is easily doable with kids over age 3 - you could easily spend a weekend in that part of the Catskills, checking out Woodstock and the Ashokan Reservoir too.
