Like I've mentioned in the past, people may not realize how small in land area the Buffalo metro is for having over 1 million people within it. Only Hartford and Milwaukee are smaller in terms of land area and having over 1 million people in the metro area.

Metro areas are defined by the economic, commuting activity between the host city outward. For instance, Yates county was added to the Rochester metro a year or two ago. Another fact comparing Erie county to Monroe county, Monroe county is about 40% smaller in land size.

Again, the Buffalo metro area is just Erie and Niagara counties and that is due to the commuting activity. I knew that about Yates County and that Monroe, Wayne, Livingston, Ontario and Orleans Counties are also a part of the Rochester metro area.
