The city that never sleeps could be quarantined as the virus is now killing one resident every 17 minutes. The home to more than eight million has become the epicentre of the outbreak in the US and since its first case 28 days ago has killed 728 and infected 52,318 – nearly half the US total.

I realize that this disease is contracted mostly by direct contact, and with a population of 8 million, NYC is, SADLY, a fertile breeding ground for it. However, given how quickly and how far it's spreading, my gut is telling me that there's simply more to it, and we, the public, are not getting the entire story.....

If you compare to other metro areas that are similarly as large, they're no where as bad, at least given the data we have to work with. I feel pretty fine in Tokyo right now and it's even larger AND had it earlier. There's more to it than just density. Hong Kong is also not as bad, though hopefully those statistics are right. Can't really trust China.

I don’t have a ton of experience in Tokyo (traveled for work a bunch of times) but despite close proximity I’ve always found most Japanese people to be (1) considerate and (2) hygienic. If someone was even feeling a bit sick they would wear a mask.

But perhaps I have an incorrect view.

No, I think that your view of cultural differences are pretty much spot on....

Reminds me of something I read, DECADES ago, after a college campus mass shooting. To paraphrase what the author of the article said, in America, a person gets wound-up, and assuming the world is against him, so he gets a gun, takes it to a hotel room, opens the window, and starts randomly shooting at the people below. In the Asian cultures, a person with a similar, frustrated mind set, gets a gun, goes to a hotel, then shoots himself. Completely different cultural viewpoints on life, and how we, as individuals, fit in.

Meanwhile, what is Cuomo and deBlasio doing besides pointing fingers, going on TV reading off numbers or releasing sick felons out in the streets?

We have to keep in mind that NY is testing more people than many states combined. So, that has to be considered as well in terms of official known cases.
