In 1664, the city was named in honor of the Duke of York, who would become King James II of England. James II was responsible for the Royal African Company that shipped more slaves to the Americas than any other venture.

Therefore “New York” as a name is associated with slavery and needs to be changed.

No, but I’d like to see Cuomo and De Blasio explain this away.

I'm OK with New Amsterdam.

But "Duke of York" being a title, not the name of a single individual, one could say that once James II became king and was no longer duke then NY was no longer representative of him. The fact that it's a "new" York rather than that old slave trader the Duke says that maybe its ok.

But it was named after THAT Duke of York. So no dice.

Maybe renaming the state and city after Frederick Douglass?

I'd be okay with New Amsterdam also.

The whole country and its institutions are associated with slavery so let's just disband the whole thing. Of course, this is true of virtually every country in the world, so hopefully all countries will be abolished.

But then since humanity is associated with slavery we would have to abolish humanity, as well. I hear Flavor-Aid has a strong, masking flavor.

But seriously, New York was not named after the Duke of York to commemorate his atrocious business dealings the way some famous American traitors have been memorialized in support of their actions. It's a totally different thing.

I would be okay with New Amsterdam for New York City but I am not sure about the rest of NY State.
