It looks like it is and that you are correct about Siemens buying the facility: https://www.corningny.com/list/membe...-energy-inc-87

There are a few job openings at that facility as well: https://jobs.siemens.com/jobs?page=1...ILES&limit=100

The economy there rises and falls with the swings in the company's fortunes.

That said, I'm grateful Corning was able to turn the company around from what condition they were in 20 years ago. They've been able to invest in new, state-of-the-art facilities, and they have satellite facilities in Rochester (Fairport/E. Rochester area), and elsewhere in western NY.

Anyone considering Corning for relocation would have to take some things into consideration, but the company and the fact that it's a small city in Upstate, NY, are considerations, I think. It can work for some people and not others, I know a few folks who live there and they like it and are raising families in Corning.

One big plus is the countryside around there. Not much going on these days in terms of economic growth, but the scenery is beautiful.

That's good news.

I agree with everything posted on here. My family and I lived in Corning for three years and loved it. It is a beautiful area with wonderful people, and contrary to what some people think, surprisingly diverse. Market Street is a great place with great bars and restaurants. Loved Three Birds, The Cellar and Hand & Foot. Also Old World and Poppleton's were great spots too, as a well as Fiesta Brava and the India Restaurant (name escapes me). A shoutout to Peaches and Cream, best ice cream parlor on earth. A friendly warning: whatever you do, DO NOT ORDER A LARGE, unless you have a bib on hand!

That said, there were a few things that made living there a little less hospitable:

1. Shopping, or lack thereof. If you are like me, and actually enjoy shopping for clothes in person, then you will have to drive. The nearest decent mall is in Rochester (yes, I know about Arnot and Ithaca Mall, but be honest, you know they both suck). So, you better enjoy driving, because you will be doing a lot of it! My family actually did enjoy the driving, at least for the first two and a half years, but eventually it got really tiring.

2. Small town provincialism. This could be a good or bad thing, depending on how you view it. Because it is a small town everybody is in everyone's business, even if you don't want to be. I don't think that is unique to Corning as it is common in most small towns. If you want a good example, read up on the story of how the Corning Alternative School for Math and Science ("ASMS") came to be, and you will see what I mean. Hint - that was supposed to be a public school open to everyone, but turned into a private school available only to the already well off. (It was due almost entirely to the efforts of a single semi-retired lawyer who wanted to preserve two high schools so that kids could play football. No I am not making this up!).

3. One horse ("company") town. As was said above, Corning is great if you work at Corning, the Hospital or maybe Siemens. Otherwise, not much going on job wise. I was lucky in that I did work at Corning and it was great. Really smart people, great salary, and great organization. Problem is, if for some reason you wanted to make a move out of Corning Inc., you literally had to move out of Corning because there really isn't any place else to work. I had buddies that worked in Rochester and/or Buffalo whose families were still in Corning because they could not sell their houses.

4. Finally, there is a lot of poverty, not as much in Corning proper, although there was some, but especially outside of Corning, in places like Bath, Addison, Presho, Elmira, etc. It is somewhat hidden, but once you become integrated into the community you will begin to notice it. I cannot tell you how many people we knew personally who were on public assistance. Also, not to stereotype, but the number of people missing most or all of their teeth, with track marks on their arms, and just wondering aimlessly around without hope was very eye opening for me. While I don't come from money by any means, I did grow up in a relatively prosperous area (classic poor kid in the rich neighborhood deal) in a very, very large metro area outside of NY. I had never seen that sort of poverty close up, especially among white people. Honestly, it changed my perspective on a lot of things. So, in that since, it was a positive experience.

Again, overall we loved Corning. We still have friends there and try to make it back whenever we can.
