I would say the Buffalo and Rochester areas are very much on the same level. Buffalo is more "known" nationally because of their 2 pro sports team. Buffalo has a little better downtown and waterfront area. However, I would stay Rochester has better universities (UofR and RIT) compared to Buffalo (UB and Buff state). I also agree Rochester has better suburbs/schools, some of the best in the nation if you ask me. Too bad the 2 cities weren't a little bit closer, 74 miles from the center of both downtowns. Even with only being about an hour and 15 mins away they still "seem" farther apart.

What is interesting is that you can get some Buffalo radio stations(AM and FM) pretty easily in the western suburbs of Rochester and I'm sure the opposite is true in say the suburbs to the E/NE in the Buffalo area.

One thing that is very doable, if one wanted to bring the 2 regions closer together would be to complete Rt531 all the way to Lewiston. This would connect all the towns along the canal. Rochester, Spencerport, Brockport, Holley, Albion, Medina, Middleport, Gasport, Lockport. Maybe this route would make it less boring, plus may help to revitalize all these towns.
Rt531 could connect with the 990 outside of Lockport, connecting UB, and Buffalo.
If this road was built, I would recommend Niagara Falls, if the Bills ever build a new stadium. I know I've heard in the past, ideas about making NF more of an entertainment area for Buffalo. This would be perfect. As so much of Buffalo's fan base isn't directly from Buffalo, this could be great for people from Rochester and Canada to feel a little more equity.
^ I'd also say that the development of Batavia/Genesee County would go a long way in connecting both of the metro areas.
It does, but its one island between the 2 cities. I've always said remove the tolls and increase interchanges. They could put an exchange at 237, 33 and 63, but there's a huge swath of nothing between Batavia and Pembroke.

Yes, there would have to be a string of continuous development from roughly Pembroke to Bergen or so, to essentially bridge the 2 areas through Genesee County.
It is an interesting county in that it is actually in the Rochester CSA, but Notre Dame Jr./Sr. High in Batavia is actually in the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo(yet sports teams play in Section 5). So, in some aspects it is kind of a bridge due to a combination of factors.
Batavia is deadsville. It died in 1958 when they closed the massive Massey Harris Plant. There is not much there, Orleans County is pretty poor. Mancuso's was a fabulous restaurant in its day.

Actually, the micro area got some love from fdi intelligence in regards to its American Micro Areas of the Future in 2015/16 rankings, if I'm not mistaken. I'll try to find the information about that.

I worked there for 25 years and its deadsville. There are a couple of local employers O-AT-KA milk, Graham Manufacturing and Bonduelle vegetable processing. Alpina Yogurt closed in 2019. Its primarily agriculture.
