Hey! My family and I want to homestead. We want to grow our food and keep cows, chickens, goats, and horses. What are some good towns to look in.
We’re looking for somewhere that’s more liberal.
Has a great homeschooling community.
Has a lot of activities for children.
Has a rural feel to it.
A max of 2hrs away from NYC.
Allows farming and livestock

Might need to look in a different state to meet all of your criteria...

You may want to look in Ulster County around New Paltz or Saugerties. Perhaps around Woodstock as well.

I’m also wondering if parts of Sullivan County would also fit as well.

...Yet another family looking for a rural lifestyle...but with the underlying tone of trendy urbanism in it. A family that sounds like this moved up here/ lives down the road...calls the law continuously during hunting season for no reason other than they don't like this rural activity. B#tches to the town when the farmer next to me leaves any trace on the road after going between fields with his manure spreader. But they have been a financial boon to the local hardware store. Bought and put up posted signs on anything bigger than a twig. And should you be ahead of them on these back roads...tailgate/flash their headlights.....No thanks..plz do stay within that 2hr/ NYC requirement....

It is important that people who want to convert to living more of the land in an area conducive to it be very self-aware of how their urbanized sensibilities will need to be self-managed *severely* if they don't want to be rightly written off as Cidiots by their neighbors. (In rural areas, you need the good will and esteem of those neighbors far more than you do in a less rural area.)
