I looking for some advice and any direction members on this sub-forum might offer me.
My brother, who is 54, lives in New York State (North Westchester County) and I am doing some research in an attempt to help him.
Here is a summary of his situation:
January, 2020 -- he had an emergency heart issue that resulted in surgery and the ICU.
He was in the hospital for weeks and then was recovering at home.
He used up all of his Federal family leave time during recovery
Early in April he contracted COVID and ended up in the hospital again, on ventilator and in a coma for a couple of weeks.
He came out of ICU, but remained in the hospital and then in a rehab place for more weeks. He went into the hospital in early April and was finally discharged from the rehab in mid-July.
He had been feeling fairly well right before he contracted COVID, but now is essentially disabled.
He has good days & bad days, but never knows what to expect on any given day. His biggest issue is with extreme fatigue and lightheadedness.
He is part of COVID clinic program at Westchester Hospital and so sees specialists every month.
Here is the problem:
Prior to the first hospitalization, he was very low income. He has since run out of all Family Leave allowances and his former job is long gone.
The state of NY has denied him unemployment and has given him no recourse. He has applied multiple times to no avail.
He has also applied for SNAP, rental assistance and other programs and has gotten nowhere.
Bottom-line, he has no income at all and no ability to work, at least right now -- it's possible he will someday improve enough to work again, but he can't right now.
He has NYS Medicaid, so is tied to the state for his healthcare for now.
Does anyone on this forum have any ideas on what he can do try and get some help? My sister, father and I all live in different states and try to help as much as we can, but there is only so much we can do. What I am looking for is advice on how he might be able to get some traction with the unemployment or Social Security of other social programs in New York State.
I'm sorry that this is so long, but I would be very appreciative of any advice.

Thanks for your response. I believe so, but I will forward this link to him to be sure.
