My wife and I (mostly me) are sick of apartment living and would like to leave Brooklyn. Right now we are working from home but doubt that will last forever so we are scoping out places that are commutable to mid town. Nyack kind of looks like a hassle, but the housing prices are much cheaper than say Westchester.

We are also planning a family so schools are a top concern. I cannot for the life of me understand why so many schools in the New York area are so bad, but I don't know much about Nyack or its area.

Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you

Is Nyack the only place you are looking into? What about parts of Westchester given the need to commute to Midtown? What is your budget.

The large majority of public schools in Westchester and Rockland are excellent.

The Nyack SD is not as highly regarded as others because it is racially and economically diverse. However, it is one of the true diverse school districts in the suburbs - certain school districts in the suburbs that people call diverse really aren't, they are just all minority. Nyack is truly racially and economically diverse. It is also more liberal than surrounding districts and more artsy oriented. It has a hip downtown and more of a gritty urban feel than other suburban areas. For Rockland, and the northern suburbs in general, it is sort of a liberal ground zero - where they have gay pride parades and such.

Regarding commuting to midtown, Nyack has issues insofar as there is no train there. What people do is either take a bus or drive/take a bus across the TZB to the Tarrytown station, or drive to the Nanuet or Pearl River station. But it is all relative, and Nyack will have a better midtown commute than some places, and you have to balance what you want, what you can afford, and where you want to live. It is cheaper than Westchester for a reason - in Westchester you are paying for the better commute, excluding certain northern areas.

Do some take the NJ Transit train from Nanuet?

How is the Nanuet School system now that we are on the subject? Also how Liberal or Conservative is Nanuet?

What may be another option is West Nyack just down the road from the village and it is in the Clarkstown Central SD, which has a little bit better reputation. It is still pretty diverse, but with more of an Asian and Hispanic leaning in terms of students of color, with some black students. I believe all 3 groups make up 37% of the district’s students: https://data.nysed.gov/enrollment.ph...d=800000039375

So, that could be an option in terms of a better “reputation” in terms of schools, but still close to some things in Nyack. West Nyack is zoned for Clarkstown South HS, by the way. https://data.nysed.gov/profile.php?instid=800000039353

Why would you want to move from Brooklyn to what amounts to little Brooklyn?

Why do people make such a big deal about "diversity" in schools? Does everything have to include race?

I remember when Dr. Martin Luther King Said:
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Too bad we don't follow his dream anymore. EVERYTHING is about the color of skin sadly.

Diversity isn't necessarily about just race and if people were perfectly honest, MLK Jr. was not as well liked as it is made out to be. By the way, he got that "I have a dream" idea from this woman: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prathia_Hall
(Start about 39:20 of this video): https://video.wcny.org/video/the-black-church-episode2/

Nyack actually is a legitimately culturally and even economically diverse community. It isn't simply just about race. It is known for being pretty artsy, it has public housing, it had a Christian college and it is a nightlife spot for the county, along with what 987ABC mentioned.

It looks like you who are making the assumption that divresity is limited to skin color.

Diversity includes religion and country/ethnicity of origin and other backgrounds as well. It seems like the idea that diversity means "black people" is common in New York.
