This isn't going to go anywhere. Not at all.

For years, New York City and state lawmakers have been working to make it harder and more expensive for residents to smoke. A public health group is now laying out an ambitious goal: Ending the sale of smokable tobacco products altogether. The New York State Public Health Association is among 148 organizations worldwide that signed onto a statement released Monday calling for governments to “commit to work towards phasing out sales of combustible tobacco products.”

If no one watched this video I posted in the Upstate Black/African American community thread, it actually touches on the topic of menthol cigarettes and how potential enforcement can impact certain communities where said cigarettes are usually smoked. Here it is again:

If a few years ago you had told me that something would come along like vaping that gets people off cigarettes would be banned in NY and then cigarettes themselves would be banned and then pot would be legal I'd have said yes NY is stupid but your just crazy cause even NY has limits to how stupid it is.

And yet................

Not surprising, as a lot of this is a matter of revenue(think more in terms of “Cannabis” options) and “health”/addiction, but as the video mentioned in regards to a ban in MA, people go to nearby states for cigarettes that they wanted. In the case of NY, you have the Native lands that sell them and there is also the underground market for them. So, there are other things that come into play that the state needs to be aware of.

That's what I was thinking. Pot is becoming legal and they're trying to make smoking not. I don't care either way. Just saying, what a turnaround.

A petition by an interest group, not a regulatory body or anyone else with actual power.

Whoop-de-do. A chicken has more teeth than this proposal. Also, the cannabis vs. tobacco issue is not zero-sum. As I understand, right now the cannabis regulations state that cannabis is legal to possess and use wherever tobacco is. If tobacco is prohibited, cannabis would be as well under that rubric.

Prohibitionists want to ban (or regulate into non-existence) everything. Authoritarian prigs.
