Hello, I am from CT and currently selling my house and we have the opporunity to stay in CT, but I have been reading about how NY is a great place for parents with children with autism.

My son is 4.

Are there any areas that are highly recommended in terms of support?

My son currently recieves OT, ABA, Speech and is at a clinic for 35 hours per week. If we were to move to NY I would want to know my son would have access to those three services.

Housing budget: $275k

Thank you in advance!

What part of the state are you looking to move to? This thread could help in terms of information: https://www.city-data.com/forum/new-...-services.html

I believe there is a thread or 2 in the Westchester County forum, among others, with some information as well.

Thank you!

I thought about the following areas based on some research but open to anything that financially makes sense as well as is supportive for our son:
-Rochester
- Albany
- Buffalo
- Syracuse

If we were to move to NY we would probably like to be in a suburban or area with lots of nature maybe a cute downtown with coffee shops or a book store.

I would say if you do the Syracuse area, while the villages in this school district don’t have downtowns with those things, I would say to look at the East Syracuse-Minoa SD. It was mentioned in the thread I posted as being noted for its good services and you can still be in close proximity to the Eastwood neighborhood of Syracuse, which has 2 bookstores and 2 cafes, among some other things, on its Main Street(James Street).

A neighborhood in that SD that would put you within relatively close proximity to that Syracuse neighborhood is the Franklin Park area of the town of DeWitt(east of Kinne Street/north of Kirkville Road). It isn’t walkable, but has some park space within and a big park across Kinne Street from the neighborhood. In fact, Challenger Baseball for children with special needs plays its games there. So, that may be something to consider.

Something else I just thought of is that the Fremont/Fremont Hills area of the town of Manlius within the school district puts you close to the village of Fayetteville, which also has 2 or 3 cafes and Green Lakes State Park. Fayetteville is south of that community and Green Lakes is east of it. Fayetteville also has the Towne Center at Fayetteville shopping center.

I would also suggest the Minoa Farms development in the village of Minoa nearby, but watch out for property taxes there, as they can be pretty high. It is a newer development though and that could appeal to you.

Kirkville further east/NE is a more rural area of the SD.

You should be able to get a home within your budget within the district as well.

^Happy Holidays to you too and hopefully, others will offer some other potential options that may be just as good of or an even better fit. I will say to view the thread I posted earlier, as it has some good information, like an organization that offers some respite for couples/families with children with special needs(David’s Refuge, which is also based in the Syracuse area).

One other thing…

This private preschool in Syracuse also is a great program for children with and without Autism(or those with or without special needs): https://jowonio.org/

It is on the city’s East Side not too far from the ES-M SD.

Here are some more resources on the local, state and national levels: https://jowonio.org/resources/

While it isn’t autism specific, here is a program that the East Syracuse-Minoa SD offers for students with disabilities.
