im not familiar with these areas.....my family is relocating to fort drum from california. my final options of living are a house in lowville, ny or an apartment in (south central) watertown, ny. can anyone tell me what kind of areas these are....i have a 2 and 3 year old and i dont want to live in a bad area.......and how are the schools in these areas??? thanks for your info in a advance.....
with Watertown as far as being close to anything you need and it is closer to the base. That is especially big during the rough winters there. While Watertown is a city of about 28,000, it's not that bad, but not much to do. I believe the schools are fine there and you can get a good education there.
Lowville is a village of about 4-5,000 people and is in the middle of nowhere really. It's safe and has good schools, but not much to do at all.
I can't think of any place within fifty miles of Watertown that is a bad area. But Watertown itself will be a lot easier to adjust to for someone coming in from out of town unless you're use to really rural.
Watertown and the area are one of the few areas in Upstate that are actually GROWING. A lot of the expansion of Drum has something to do with it...but there is a lot of commercial development that has sprung up as well. For modern amenities...id pick Watertown. If you like the pastoral life Lowville is a good town. You can pick up a GORGEOUS victorian house there for a song.
By the way, kids that live on Fort Drum either go to Indian River Schools(about 2/3rds of the base-essentially the newer parts of the base) or Carthage Schools(about 1/3rd of the base-essentially Old Post/the eastern third). There are/were off post housing options within both of those school districts as well.
