It is on average higher than Ulster even though the high peaks in Ulster are higher than anything there. Therefore it is colder and the leaves change sooner than they do especially in central or eastern Ulster.

So it is like Garrett County, MD where in Western MD, before the Allegheny Front, you have peaks then dips, but once you cross the Front you plateau and stay at a high elevation, thus the climate is colder.
I guess Delaware from Ulster is the same, albeit less dramatic?

I figured it was because we had a bit of a cold snap earlier than usual.

That can happen. It is similar to how you can drive north on I-81 north of Syracuse and it can be completely dry, but all of a sudden, you hit a snowstorm or vice versa. So, changes can be that abrupt.

Yeah just like you can get 4” of snow in Cobleskill and nothing at all in like Summit or Jefferson.

Yea but what is so prominent at the DE/Ulster line that makes this change sudden?

I don't know and I honestly do not think it is something that occurs as abrupt as you are mentioning on a regular basis. That is the same with the weather example I gave and likely for the one that hotkarl mentioned as well. Sometimes the snow band will be further north or further south, from my experience. Same likely goes with the foliage/leaves clearing out.
