It's more legalized gambling. I think it's bad.

The lottery is bad enough. See the saturation advertising the State uses to promote it? Considering the odds, some people have called it a 'tax on people who can't do math.'

I'm not a believer in the Nanny State. But, the State actively promoting vices? What's next - they going to start running ho's and selling rock?

well the lottery returns 50% to winners, the casinos 85 to 93%, the lottery is what i consider the tax on dumb people ,low income people dont pay enough taxes but they chase the carrot of instant wealth wit 7 million to 1 chances.
what i am seeing is in west va. is parking lots full of va and md. plates and on the west end (wheeling and moutaineer ) i see ohio plates.
wouldnt it be better to allow people to donate their taxes with odds of winning being fair vs the terrible odds that the lottery has.
it would create jobs at the casinos , motels and local shopping. i hear that the organized crime enters the picture but that could be controled.
most states have horse/dog racing. so why let the money escape to neighboring states?
just want imput about the pros and cons.

The problem is, when those clueless people start spending the rent money, the kids milk money, etc. on the lottery, then get into trouble, we taxpayers wind up bailing them out.

You could answer, with justification, they'll just go to a neighboring state and spend their money, and we still wind up stuck with the check.

I don't know.

Default casinos? not a problem

Casinos are fine with me. I don't like gambling, I don't play lottery, I don't go to casinos. But they're fine- they provide a service to people. The problem is not the casino but those who abuse gambling.

Or would you say bars and liquor stores are bad and should be closed because some individuals are alcoholics?

I support casinos also because they're a major source of income for Native Americans. We owe it to them to give them something back after exterminating them.

No, I don't think bars and liquor stores should be closed.

I would have a real problem if the State government started aggressively marketing booze, and fielding multi-million dollar ad campaigns encouraging people to drink more.

Default where are the ads?

I've got to say I don't see "aggressive" advertising of lotery and casinos anywhere around the New York Metropolitan Area.

Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, and AC are just a free bus ride away. People who REALLY want to gamble their rent money away CAN and WILL very easily.

I personally would rather see the revenue stay in NY.

Yes, I play a few hands of Blackjack every now and then. I might even throw a few dollars a the roulette table. I play with what I came with. I don't go pillaging my debit/credit cards.

Maybe that would help? Allow casinos in NY, but don't allow ATM's within 2500 feet of the casino, and don't allow them to accept credit or debit cards? Just a thought.

Whether good or bad, Oneida Nations Turning Stone Casino is the largest employer in the Utica area.

Look what Turning Stone has done for the area. Created a lot! And people will continue to complainabout it. Bad habits are everywhere, but Turning Stone has done a lot to give a bit of a resurgance to the Utica area. In a place that's dying (Utica), the Oneida Nation seems to provide alot, i.e. jobs, entertainment, growth. I advocate it. They also have lower priced gas too!
