My husband and I are looking to purchase out first home. We are both originally from the town of Poughkeepsie. We don't have many bad things to say about the area except for the current high housing costs. We are currently renting in Milton, NY and love the privacy of the area. We have looked at a few homes in the ellenville area. Brand new construction half the price of Dutchess County! I am a stay at home mom and my husband travels the area for work....from middletown to kingston. So, we wouldn't be looking for work. I love the views and privacy of the homes in Ellenville but am not sure about the town. Is it safe for my kids?? How are the schools??? My daughter does well in school and we do alot of reviewing at home. It seems like a nice area and my family is only an hour away.
Help! Is there anything I need to know before making the move?

Ellenville
Personally, I would never choose Ellenville, there is nothing there. You're family would be bored to death. There are plenty of cheaper areas around like Pine Bush perhaps (town of Crawford).

The jewel of Ellenville is the countryside, views, privacy, mountain ridges all combining to offer value for any buyer. Homes are much more reasonable then this side of the mountain [for ex Pine Bush] with many folks like yourselves drawn by the blatant value. I have friends w/ children in the E'ville schools who moved from PB and their children thrived. Suggest you visit the system to see if it suits your children's needs. My cousins husband and her own a horse farm in the ridge w/ stunning views and absolutely love their location. Many artists live in the hills with a thriving cultural community and community events. Short of things to do? PB and Middletown are short drives...........Where else could you buy an 1800 sq ft chalet, 3 bdrms, 2.3 acres w/ privacy and fabulous views just minutes from services in the $230's..............

thank you. it is nice to hear some positive about the area. Like I said, we are not in a rush. We love the area we are in now (marlboro) but are just looking at some options. It just seems like a whole lot more for the money up there.

Prices are very cheap, but you get what you pay for. Not centrally located to anything, especially activities for youth.

One would have to think why is the housing so cheap? You pay for what you get. The schools are far from stellar and cannot be compared to their neighbor, New Paltz Schools. Have you ever walked around the village? It is a horribly depressing place. I seriously would not enter the village at night without a gun on my person. There are so many wonderful towns to live in the Hudson valley. I suggest for your children’s sake to spend a little more money and look elsewhere.

An absolute dump ! Surrounded by ex cons that settle there after being released from the local pens in Kerhonkson and Woodbourne. It's got prettier scenery and is warmer than nearby Montighetto, I mean Monticello. Congratulations ! Enjoy Smellenville !
