Looking at Niagara-On-The-Lake a little bit more, while not on a lake, Corning in terms of its Downtown/Gaffer District and its proximity to wineries in the southern Finger Lakes comes to mind as well.
Watkins Glen is another place that comes to mind in terms of a nice, active Main Street, has wineries nearby and is on a lake.
Penn Yan is another Finger Lake village with wineries nearby as well, but has a bit more of an urban feel than NOTL.
We're currently traveling full-time, but ultimately with the goal of finding a place where we want to live. We're going to spend the entire summer exploring NY and southern Ontario Canada. It's partially for pleasure / enjoyment but also in the back of our minds we're always thinking "would we want to live here?" We've narrowed our choices down to RI, CT, NY, and southern Ontario Canada.
Some of the NY places suggested in this thread we have visited before and will return to this summer, others we have never been to and would like to see. We've never been to Niagara-on-the-Lake. It was highly recommended to me in the Canada forum and it looks really lovely!
Just to follow up, were you able to make it to NOTL or some of the NY communities mentioned in the thread?

Oh yes we sure did! It was an amazing summer we will never forget! I'll post pictures in the photo thread soon. One thing I have to say about NOTL is that it is the most romantic place I've ever been.
The wildfire smoke was bad the last couple days we were in NOTL and it also caused problems a few other times during our NY travels but other than that it was a glorious summer.

Besides Corning, what are some other NY communities you were able to visit?
