In the article I posted, the Lenape are now in Oklahoma, over 1500 miles from their ancestral homeland. The accuracy of the census can be disputed as to what is classified as a Native American. Wouldn't it have been better to have Native American as a choice instead of American Indian which can be confused with people from India?

" identify as “American Indian or Alaska Native” alone or in a combination of races in a city of 8.8 million, according to the 2020 Census. That’s up from 1.3% in 2010, when the decennial census tallied 111,749 of 8.1 million people.

Demographers warn that such small numbers are prone to errors, such as Americans with personal or family origins in India checking the box."

Yes, that occur with other groups as well. Keep in mind though that many may be Hispanics that are of Native ancestry, along with others of Native ancestry. so, that could play a part in the population count in NYC.

I suspect its the American Indian vs Native American confusion that renders the results suspect. Indian Americans are people from India vs American Indians are Native American. This is quite confusing.
