A family home burned to the ground 7/3/2023 and the flames took darned near everything. I found in the ashes the Marriage Certificate of the great grand parents who were married July 4th, 1908 and who bought the home in 1940. The certificate was burned almost in half, leaving only the top half where the names, date and place of marriage were entered. This Marriage Certificate was filled in at the time of marriage by the Priest, Magistrate or whomever and handed to the couple and should not be confused with the Marriage License on file at the court house (a copy of which I have). The courthouse has no similar Marriage Certificates.
My quest is to find a similar Marriage Certificate from the 1908 era from which I can copy the lower half ( missing on my copy) and have the local document restoration company combine the two into one. If you are a descendant of such a couple married around 1908 and would be willing to send me a copy of the bottom half, I would be forever in your debt.
This recreated document would be solely for family history and nothing more.
Any guidance on how to find a similar Marriage Certificate would be appreciated also.
Check with the Steuben County Courthouse in Bath for records. Hopefully, someone else will chime in with more in depth information, as to how to go about finding what you are looking for.
The courthouse already sent the marriage license on file. I'm looking for the document issued at the time and place of marriage, back then called the "marriage certificate". I imagine it would have to be from someone who was married around that era. Thanks for your answer though.
I'm still trying to find a similar marriage certificate to scan the bottom half and join it to the existing top half. Anyone have one hanging on the wall or in their photo album ? Thanks.
Perhaps reach out to local media, that could give some attention to what you are looking for.
