Buffalo and Rochester are pretty much in the center of the path and Syracuse and Plattsburgh are both within it. What are your plans for this? Anyone going to a particular location or event they recommend?

I've got my plans, but I would recommend Hamlin Beach State Park for viewing. A large area, and I believe it's still free to get in.
There are a lot of places along Lake Ontario, the Thousand islands and Adirondacks that are expecting for crowds and to capitalize off of the visitors coming to view the eclipse.

Turning Point would be another good vantage point.
