Amsterdam is about 25% Hispanic(mainly Puerto Rican) as well. So, it is a bit different than the other 2.
Gloversville at least has a visible and long time black population, as well as a long time African Methodist Episcopal Zion church(People's, not to be confused with the church of the same name on Syracuse's South Side) on the city's East Side. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Peopl...11618718877534
Johnstown also has/had an AME Zion church, but its black population is the smaller of the 3. Amsterdam had one as well(St. Paul's AME Zion on Cedar Street, where the community was concentrated in that city), but was destroyed due to Urban Renewal.
Another thing you could do, as I'm sure schools are a part of the equation, is to look into Niskayuna just outside of Schenectady. It is a very good SD and is more culturally diverse than Gloverville or Johnstown, mainly due to a pretty substantial Asian student population.
Just curious, but are you also open to other school options? I ask, because that may open things up for you even further.
Hopefully, others will chime in with more specific information(maybe one of the Beekman's will read this, as that is a long time black family in that area). A sports reference from that family: https://bceagles.com/coaches.aspx?rss=1&path=football (He played at Boston College and for the Chicago Bears. His dad, who also went to Amsterdam in the 1970's played football at Delaware State, an HBCU.)
It is known for its good Boys and Girls Basketball programs. A current reference, whose cousin I believe was a former star athlete at Gloversville a little while ago(Ace was a QB and Basketball player there a while back): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kplO...&feature=share
(Notre Dame)-Bishop Gibbons in Schenectady was the other school that came to mind: https://nd-bg.org/
A sports reference that came to mind that went there that happens to be related to Beekman and Smith, as his mother comes from another long time black family in Amsterdam: https://www.norwichathletics.com/spo...rrick?view=bio
So, there are people from or related to those in the community in those smaller cities that have attended nearby private schools.
Turner-Carroll, before it closed about 10-15 years ago, was essentially an all black Catholic HS before it closed that was known for its good Football and Basketball teams. This current NFL free agent, whose had a long NFL career, attended the school: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corey_Graham
You also had the Stokes brothers who played Basketball at Cincinnati and Hofstra, Doug Worthington(ended up transferring to St. Francis after the school closed) who played Football at Ohio State and in the NFL: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug_Worthington , Julius Page played Basketball at Pitt and Karon Barnes played Basketball at Cornell, among others.
His sons were good Basketball players, with one actually playing Football at Syracuse and UMass and another playing Basketball for a portion of his career at Divsion 1 programs Robert Morris and North Dakota. https://www.syracuse.com/sports/2017...rth_dakot.html
Also, an article about the son of former Greece Athena, Syracuse University and NBA Basketball player John Wallace. His son also played at Athena for a portion of his HS years: https://www.niagara-gazette.com/spor...3a01c8dd6.html
