I'm a lifelong New Jersey resident who is looking to one day have some land of his own to hunt. The public land here is extremely crowded and the private land gets more and more expensive to lease every year-good luck trying to buy it. I've been looking at the area bounded by the purple line here:

Google Maps

From what I can tell (Google maps doesn't have very much up close satellite imagery) there is development here and there, but I'm guessing most of the roads are private/unimproved since they're not listed on the map? Anyway, can anyone tell me more about the area? It seems like the ideal place to buy 40-50 acres for a hunting camp. I'm not looking for much, just a small cabin that would allow a few hunters to bunk in the fall and winter, and I'd probably bring the family up in the summer. Anyone own something similar in this area?

There are actually a few more roads than are shown on the google map but not many, and some won't be open during the winter unless you plow them yourself. There is a better map you can get from Jimapco.com called the NYS Road Atlas which gives very specific area pages for the whole state that shows better detail.

The area you've highlighted is a prime location for what you're looking for. There are a lot of logging and hunting camps all over that section. There are also a couple of private hunting clubs with their own acerage though I don't know the names of any of them. You'll see anything from old or new mobile homes to one room cabins without running water or central heat to facilities that are a bit more modern. Most all will have acreage and very often are heavily wooded with only a small clearing. (Don't bring the wife or kids as their is virtually nothing to do).

Back in the 1970's I remember NY state maps printed by some gas company had a "Johnny Horizon Don't Litter" symbol stuck in the middle of the white spot centered around North Osceola. White certainly is the characteristic color of that landscape. I would link to a snowmobile trail map except it seems DEC must have privatized that this year.
