Hello,
I've search these boards for Ft. Drum info, but was hopeing someone would have some updated info on the housing situation. We just got orders and will be there in March/April timeframe, I need to find a 3+ bedroom anything! The waiting list for us is 18-20 months so on-post housing is out of the question, I need a rental perferably a house or townhouse, but anything will do. I have a 2 and 4 year old I just don't want to get there and be stuck in a hotel for ever you know?! I've googled rentals in the area but have come up with next to nothing. So if you have any information, it would be greatly appreciated.

ww w.newzjunky.com has a section with classified as well. It has a lot of information about jefferson county and st lewis county including the news, recreation, apartments...everything. I also PMed you some information. I bet you love Germany! My friend is over there now and loves how she can travel from country to country in one day. Have you thought about purchasing a home. If you find a deal you can most definitely sell it for the same or more. Sometimes buying is much cheaper then renting up there.

You may want to take a chance for on post housing. The wait times on the website are not accurate. Fort Drum has both new and old housing. The new housing is very nice and in most cases, much larger than the old housing. We waited out the new housing and for us (FGO) it was 600sf larger than the existing housing, a single house rather than a duplex, has a two car garage as opposed to a one car in the older houses, has a fireplace and central air. When we arrived we were told it would be a 4-6 month wait for the new housing, or a two week wait for the old. The old housing isn't bad, it's about the same as on post housing in most places. We were in no hurry to move because I wanted the kids to finish the school year at their old school, so we waited on the new house. If you aren't hung up on having a new house, I would be willing to bet you can get into an existing house fairly quickly. Things change around here all of the time, so don't quote me on that.
Good Luck

Forgot to add one thing. A BCT came back from deployment in the fall. They are coming off of their 90 day hold and many will be moving off cycle (in the early spring). This may work to your advantage as you will beat most of the summer crowd that will be PCSing here. The housing office probably hasn't factored these moves in as they aren't notified until about 30 days before a family plans to clear quarters.

Default Hi army wife

How did it go any luck? I just found out today we are going to fort drum and it sounds miserable. I am thinking of staying in florida and letting my husband go alone. I also have a 6 year old girl and a great job and apartment. Im very nervous about this move. Please let me know if you had any luck and found a realtor. Hang in there.
Angie

Well, you know, I don't mean to be nosy, but if your husband is going to Fort Drum and you love your husband, you should go with your husband.

I would go with my wife to Antarctica if she had to go there. But apparently you like Florida better than your husband!

Hi, well we are actually still in Germany we will leave next month. I have my fingers crossed for on post housing, I have even decided I will take a 2brm if it means getting on base. They say the wait for a 2brm for an e6 is 0-1 months and the base housing looks nice. I seem to only get negative responses about moving there so I have stoped listening. There have been a few people who say they actually loved it there. Home is where you make it, right! I am excited now, about moving. If anything it will be an adventure!

If you want to live off base look on craigslist and the ahrn website oh and nnyads.com, these are all sites that I have been given by the great people on these boards.

NNY is a great place to live and a wonderful place to raise of family. I was born and raised in that area and we are trying very hard to get back up there by September, when our child starts school.
The people in NNY are very nice and neighborly. It is a very rural area, so don't think you are going to find a large social scene. But it is laid back and simple. People aren't as concerned with keeping up with the Joneses as they are about living right and having fun. And everyone up there really appreciates our soldiers and thank you for your sacrifices.
No matter where you go in life there will be negative people. And if you are a city person, you will not like it up there. It is small and cold for most of the year. But there is a lot of outdoor stuff to do. And family stuff. Growing up we did everything as a family. Snowmobiling, boating, hunting, etc. You name it, we can nnyers can make it a family event.
Don't close yourseleves in to the Watertown area or you will go insane. There is so much within an hour or 1.5 hour drive. You have alex bay, which has Boldt Castle and the Thousand Islands boat tours. They also have Mazeland and a cool mini golf place. Oh yeah, and they have the go karts. In Evans Mills and Lafargeville they have the race tracks. Those are a really good time! There is Cape Vincent and Clayton if you want to take a drive along the lake and the St. Lawrence river. The lighthouse is at the point I think in Cape Vincent, we haven't been there in a few years. If you drive up from Clayton to ALex Bay there are a couple of state parks that have great beaches. And the bridge to Canada is at the very end of 81. You can make a day trip out of it, go over the Bridge and tool around Canada for awhile. In the other direction is teh Adirondacks. Tons to do there. And I don't think Enchanted Forest is more then an hour and a half from Watertown. Your kids will love it there.
In Hogensburg, the reservation outside of Massena, they have the casino. That is going to be a long trip from the base, you will need a whole day if you want to do that.
In the winter there is snow boarding, skiing, skating, and all the other outdoor stuff.
The housing is terrible out there. Its a disgrace. You might want to branch out to consider Leray, Philidelphia, Carthage, and smaller outlying towns for rentals/buying. There may be some real estate agents in the area who can help you find a rental.
The newspaper is called the Watertown Daily Times. You can check there.
Good Luck. Let me know if you have any questions about the area.

Okay, I know I am butting in late here but I live in the area of which you speak and fort drum is close to EVERYTHING civilized. Watertown is really close by and you will have access to ALL that that city has to offer. There is a big mall, hair shops, nail shops, you name it....a SUPER WAL-MART RIGht across from the base. There are nicew churches out there. I must also note that watertown in some areas are known for drug activity, but I suppose you can find that any where. Please check Watertown Daily Times | News for today, history for tomorrow! for homes in fort drum and really close to fort drum. I hope this helps.....one more thing...........

THANK YOU FOR THE SACRIFICE THAT YOUR FAMILY MAKES TO KEEP MY FAMILY SAFE. I CONSTANTLY PRAY FOR THE TROOPS AND THEIR FAMILIES.
