Hi all

I have been on here before and people have been very helpful, thanks again. Now...

We are further along in the planning...

We will be moving to NY spring/summer next year.

Firstly we will be renting for 12 months whilst my current property here sells (HOPEFULLY! Our property market is as bad as the USA one by all accounts).

I will be working from home office, so commute nil. Advertising sales exec.

Having read all advice given here before I have a couple of questions to ask..

I think we have limited it to: Westchester, Long Island, Maybe CT if within 1-1.5 hours of manhattan?

I have FOUR (count em) girls. Will be aged 2, 8, 8 and 11. And ofcourse the wife.

Would like a nice place, Low crime, nice sized plot for kids to play, GOOD schools, Tree lined streets blah blah blah, distance to Manhattan (max 1.5-2hrs). Any thoughts on Safe towns/villages for the girls to bloom? And any to Avoid???!!

A place I can relax if the kids are in the front yard, A place I can walk the streets at night (sounds bad, It's not a hobby of mine, but you know what I mean!) without any doubts/fears, A place where the public schools are of a standard that you would have no problems sending your little ones.

I'm making a list of 8-10 places to visit on a fact finding mission.

Budget for rental is upto I guess about $5000 a month for first 6months/1year. And then if we like the area and settle about $800,000 - $850,000 property value (although I appreciate the market is impossible to call in 18 months time! But obviously it should discount 'mega high end' towns and equally less desirable areas hopefully!)

So in short I'm looking for help trimming down the 200+ town names we have on a massive list to about 10 so we can get a taster when we visit.

The wife likes shopping (like all of them) so a nice downtown area with cafes / shops / entertainment etc would be nice.

Are you going to be working in Manhattan? East side or West side (that makes a difference because from Westchester and Connecticut it's easier if you're on the East side, and the West side makes it better if you're living on Long Island or in NJ.

Default Wow

Thanks...

$800k buys lovely places in Litchfield!

What are the nicest cities / towns in Litchfield and how long do you think it would take to get on Manhattan? Transport links ok?

Thanks again.

LItchfield is WAY up there in Connecticut. It'll take a while to drive to NYC. There are no direct mass transport links, like the train - you'd have to drive to the train and then park the car...

Oh. That would explain the palaces available within our price range then! The Other CT suggestions above a bit more Manhattan friendly?

You should also consider NJ - take a look at a map!

Fairfield and Westport are 1 hour by train to Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan; the rest (other than Litchfield) are easy commutes in less time.

Yeah cool I just have, Litchfield IS WAY out there!! DOH!

But the thing is with maps, is they don't allow for local knowledge.

For example I live 24 miles north of London and using the M11 I can be central London in about 30/40 mins. However if I go 15 miles east from here I know that although it's geographically the same distance from the city it can take twice as long to get there. But yes maps do help.

You guys/girls on this forum are much more useful than a map mind you because you know blackspots and places not serviced by PT.
