Honestly, look to CNY. I live in Dutchess and taxes in both counties just keep climbing and the traffic is becoming a nightmare. Jobs aren't easy to come by either. Both my spouse and I are out of work and so many people apply to the same jobs, it's crazy. I've heard good things about the Syracuse/Cortland areas-housing is much more affordable in that area and better chances of jobs. Orange County like ours was also hit with the MTA tax-it's on your cars and payroll taxes. It's costing me a extra $25 in taxes for each car we own. We are looking to leave here if it doesn't improve job wise. As it is, my 2000sqft home from 1992 that's sits on .29 of an acre now costs me over $5000 in taxes-when we built-it was $1650. It's not slowing down and my friends in Orange County have it higher for taxes than I do. Look North-you'll do better.

Well, real estate prices have gone down in Orange County over the past few years. I've lived in Montgomery for 15 years and have seen it change quite a bit, but it still has a small village feel. I wouldn't want to be far upstate. The job situation is generally worse the farther you get away from the city. Would you be opposed to commuting to the city everyday for work? It might just be your best bet....

Would easy-NYC-access be something your children would like?

You could always try Southern Ulster or Sullivan counties...

Yeah come back to Montgomery, you could probably find something affordable in this market. I know the Spring Meadow Condos/Waterwheel in the village have gone down considerably. Lots of construction on 208 off 84. We have a Walgreens and a hotel-in-construction.
