Hello. My husband is in the Canadian military and we are waiting to hear if he is being posted to Griffiss Airforce base next summer. Yes I know its been downsized to almost nothing but we're hoping NY state as its close enough to visit family.

We will have to make a house hunting trip in the spring and will probably be renting for 3 years. We have a 3 yr old daughter who will be 4 when we move and I'm not sure when school starts down there .

We are looking for insight into different towns, cities as to what is a good family oriented place to live with good schools, things to do and see, and decent shopping . Also access to movie theatres or the odd cultural event would be great. We are currently living in the country so not sure what to expect as we know nothing of that whole Rome/Oneida county area

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!!

Debbie

If you have to pick any of those... Southern Ontario is quite nice to stay.

To the Utica-Rome area, I would say that New Hartford, Clinton and the Whitesboro area are the best choices. Rome isn't bad either and is a city of about 32,000. Communities like Oriskany and Westmoreland are close to Griffiss and are more rural/small town in character. Even North Utica is more of a suburban part of the city of Utica, which has about 60,000 people.

Schools start at 4 for Pre-K, if you can get into a program and 5 for Kindergarten. Again, I would say that the New Hartford and Clinton school districts are the best in the area in regards to academics. Here is some information about schools in Oneida County:New York schools - NY elementary, middle and high school information

There are Catholic schools in Utica and Rome that go up to Grade 12 too. Here is more information on the area as well:City of Utica, Home
