This was the ranger back at Brown Tract, which is pretty far from civilization, so it's possible the bears don't actually hang around there. But as I said, you should follow precautions anyway.

I have had multiple Bear encounters in the Adirondacks while camping at the state park campgrounds. In just the last couple of years I have had Bears in my campsite at Brown Tract Pond Campground, Nicks Lake Campground, Limekiln Campground, and Point Comfort Campground at Piseco Lake. It is very important to follow the Bear Safety Sheets!!

We were just at Lake Durant. They have a hand painted "no bears" (bear with a red slash through it) sign at the trash/recycling center. The attendant said they hadn't really had bear issues but maybe they've just been lucky. Or the sign does it. Now I wish I had taken a picture. Our 6yo daughter was even skeptical of it.

I have been to Old Forge a number of times. Very nice campsite. It is secluded, and the sites are in the shade. They do not allow motor boats on the lakes, so it is very quiet. They do allow paddle boats, row boats etc. There is a small town nearby for supplies and some extra touristy stuff.
