I've noticed that there is a relatively high number of registered sex offenders living within Beacon. There are currently 25 registered offnders in a city with a population of just over 13,000 (1 in every 593 people) compared with 413 in Poughkeepsie with a population of just over 42,000 (1 in every 844) versus NYC where there are 413 w/ pop. just over 8 million (1 in 19717)!? Very alarming to a parent. Before I move my child to Beacon does anyone have an opinion on these statistics? The data was garnered from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice through the City-Data website.

Jeebs-they'll list the ones from Downstate Correctional Facility in the registry. They are housed in the maximum security prison. If your looking at the registry-they'll list them with Greenhaven, Downstate, and Dutchess County Jail. This way you know where they all live. One of them also lists where they work.

Thanks CampingMom
You always come through with some input, much appreciated. Folks are strangely quiet on this subject though. The same on QuickTopic.

I live on Long Island and there are plenty of registered sex offenders around. I know down here we are notified by the town when one moves into our area. I know that familywatchdog.net use to give you the lists for free, but I Think they charge you a fee now, but I am sure there are other free sites that give you their names, pics, locations and job sites. It is a touchy subject. I am a parent of two very little girls - ages 3 and 9 months and I wish I could put a gps locater chip under their skin to know where they are, but all we can do as parents is try to teach our kids about "strangers" and the danger some people may pose to them and how to protect themselves. But in today's world they are running out of places to house these offenders then it becomes a community problem!

Good site for information
http://www.criminaljustice.state.ny.us/index.htm
I don't think you can link through this, but probably can cut & paste into browser. This site is free. If you know the county, then enter that. If not, you can search by zip. You'll get names, pictures, offender level, job, street address and more. It's good to have this information available...Just makes you more vigilant and aware of who your neighbors are! I am surprised though about the number of offenders living so close to schools and playgrounds. What is the justice system thinking??

Nicknat- went to that website and my god, people are so sick, if you see these crimes and it tells you when these people were paroled, and what their "limitations" are...this is crazy!

Yes-this is problem in beacon and everywhere in the US. But since this discussion is about Beacon, then yes, another reason why it gets a bad wrap. I think someone inquired on this post or another one, why no one you actually lives in beacon responds to the questions on beacon.
Perhaps its because people dont choose to make it their first choice to live, hence the quiet responses.
Again, its all about doing your research on whats good for you and your family. No place is perfect..but still, It makes you wonder when you have kids.

Does living in Fishkill for 41 years count. My parents orginally lived in Beacon when they came here from Virginia and North Carolina back in 50'. Course the area's changed alot, but it's definitely getting much better all around-it's face is changing due to who's moving in from the lower counties-and it's been for the better.
