Wait a sec the APA doesn't want to open another ski hill or advertise fun things to do in the adirondacks, the whole point is to keep people out - I'm getting the feeling that nobody in NY state knows what the APA actually does. This is really sad.

The Adirondack Park agency is trying to maintain the beauty and wildness of the Adirondacks. I don't mind some strategic development and planning like Granitestater said. Unfortunately however, too many private individuals are greedy sobs and cannot be trusted to do the right thing by themselves.

true, I don't think there should developmentation of any sort in the adk's
because the basic idea of the park was to be forever wild.

A small amount of development is fine especially if it is in villages and not out on top of hillsides in plain view. But you simply cannot trust local politicians to do the right thing themselves. Local pols are often paid off by wealthy developers with deep pockets despite their promises to the people who voted them in.

NH has also been having problems with rogue loggers. The state does not require loggers to be licensed and their are no laws against clearcutting. I saw one picture of an area that was cleared that had mudslides. Some people love to take advantage of a lack of rules and regulations. Unfortunately the actions of an eggregious few is why tougher laws and rules often have to be put into place.
I think they need to look into adding a ski area in the Adirondacks, but keep it at a smaller scale. I also think they should emphasize hiking to some of the tallest peaks. I am not familiar with hiking in that particular area, but do adequate trail systems even exist?
There are SEVERAL ski areas in the Adirondacks! Hello....Lake Placid! You may have heard of it....the Olympics were there TWICE.
~Gore Mountain
~McCauley Mountain
To name a few.
There's TONS of hiking! There are hundreds of state marked trails all over the place!
There's even snowmobile trails in the winter. The state park agency takes care of this as well.
Check out some websites for the different towns and villages of the Adirondacks.

Thanks for the tips. The last time I was in Saranac Lake was many years ago. Has that town stayed the same?
