There are certainly things about the city (NYC) that can't be replicated elsewhere, but it's fine. Personally having grown up in the city (NYC), I think it isn't really what it was anyway. Our preference is to have lots of land, if we have to drive everywhere anyway, and housing is so cheap in comparison it's easy to find any lifestyle you like: rural, mini-farm, town/village, etc.
I don't know much about jobs since we freelance/travel, but meeting people in the villages is easy- everyone is from Park Slope or the Upper West Side!
