I-87 would probably be the best way to go if the Tap wasn't always backed up going into westchester. You could always take 84 to 684 then hop onto any of the parkways that go into the Bronx. Metro North?
Fishkill to the Bronx? Used to travel that route a lot in the 90's. The Taconic State Pkwy is practically a straight shot. You cannot have a commercial vehicle on the TSP - not sure if that matters for you.
I still take the Taconic to many points south, just not as often, as I drive a commercial van more than a car. The traffic on the Taconic, IMO, is no better or worse than any other route into the city. Days & times typical of any rush hour will be the same for the TSP.
You do have to watch for deer, though. I put deer sensors (high pitched whistles) on my vehicles. I don't know if they actually work, or if I've just been fortunate; but I haven't hit a deer yet.
