Hey all, this is my first time posting on the forum and am relocating to Upstate NY from Northern NJ. This is a big change for me and I really do not know much about Upstate other than what I read on the internet. Can someone please tell me which would be less expensive to live in...Champlain and Alexandria Bay? I am used to the "city life" so I was looking into Plattsburgh and Watertown. Also, which has more stuff to do? I am taking a job offer up that way to work at either of the ports and am trying to figure out which would be the better move for me. I also need an apt to rent for 1 month starting June 8th. Any idea where I can get short term housing like this at an affordable rate? Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!

Go with the Champlain (Plattsburg) offer as you'll have an easier shot down the northway back to NJ for your city fix, plus you'll be closer to Albany for temporary ones. Montreal is pretty nice too.

Honestly, as a city person both locales will be a boring shock to you and Watertown won't be enough of a city either.

Yeah, I was thinking of going with Champlain. Do you know where I can find temporary housing for a month?

Also, Champlain is close to Montreal if you need a cultural fix. There might be something here: plattsburgh-adirondacks all housing classifieds - craigslist

Plattsburgh NY Apartment Rentals Plattsburgh NY Apartments Plattsburgh NY Housing (http://www.e-zproperties.com/Apartments.htm - broken link)

Plattsburgh Press-Republican - Classifieds - Classifieds Main Page

I hope this helps.....

Kingston Ontario is VERY close to Alex Bay, which is a great college town. You are fairly close to Ottawa too (1.5 hours). The setting in Alex Bay is MUCH nicer than Champlain. Only advantage to Champlain is that its near Lake Champlain, Montreal, Adirondacks, and good skiing. Alex Bay (and clayton) are in the 1000 Islands...which are pretty darn attractive.

Lightbulb Did you try Craigslist????

Since both are tourist towns and have students as tenants, would think that you could find temp housing with no problems. Another angle would be to advertise yourself....................You have a "plum" job, and are not just another tenant. You have a solid income and could put an ad out in the area yourself, searching for temp housing. I think with all the real estate around, you might find people actually seeking YOU out...........

Alex Bay is nice. It's right across the St. Lawrence River from Canada. You can make a trip to Ottawa or Kingston in Ontario from there within an hour to an hour and a half. Syracuse is about an hour and a half as well. Here's some info. you might like: Welcome to Your 1000 Islands NY Guide - Alexandria Bay Chamber of Commerce

Yes, I've tried Craigslist and haven't had any luck yet but I did find this... Herrings Inn - Inn, restaurant & bar. Carthage, New York. Anyone ever been there? It's going for $125/week which I think is pretty cheap, I'm just hoping its not a dirty place. Thanks alot to all of you for the info you have provided! I'm all ears for any additional comments...
