Was having a discussion with my dad recently about the troopers. Like me he is a lifelong NYS resident. He feels that NY State Troopers are less courteous and professional than they used to be. In the old days (he says) when they pulled you over for something they would call you "sir" while giving you instructions, that they were very by-the-book and were more professional than your average cop. He no longer feels this is true and that they seem to act overfamiliar with you (calling you by your first name) just like the garden variety cops, and throw their personal weight around more.

Anyone agree? disagree? what are your experiences.

I think they've always been pretty bad?

Tell me who is as polite as they "used to be" in any walk of life?

Granted, I haven't had a run in with a trooper since '99 or so (it pays to drive the speed limit), but every experience I have ever had was positive, even when I did get a ticket. They have been both professional and fair.

They seem to be pretty mechanical with no personality where other police agencies have more of a personality.

My parents are freinds with one in the Buffalo area. During his job hes strict, but on the side hes actually a good person. I think alot of people confuse strict with unprofessional.

The last time I was pulled over was actually in NC and I actually remember him as being nice. But I don't remember if he called me by the first name.

Yea, the ones I know are normal in real life, but on the job they are like robots. City cops have more personality but that is because they are more involved in the community and have to build a rapport.
