Actually, each had their own school districts. Nyack is a nice village with a walkable Downtown and decent nightlife. Nanuet is a nice "standard" suburb that is nice and has plenty of shopping nearby. I believe Nanuet has the better of the two school districts, but Nyack isn't bad or anything. I don't know about the school districts, but both Nanuet and West Nyack are nice places to live. I'd stay away from other parts of Nyack, though.
West Nyack is a little bit more quiet than Nanuet. Nanuet is more convenient for commuting, as it has a train station.
Both have very nice shops and restaurants.

Nyack is a century-old+ small town along the river. Filled now with restaurants, bars, antique shops, etc. Along the river, there are homes of exceptional affluence. But then, there are pockets of low-income housing. It creates a very diverse school district--- socio-economically and racially. Thus, Nyack does have a bit more crime and violence and the more "quiet" areas of Nyack. But the town also attracts a certain artsy-liberal crowd, who will take the price of diversity.
Nanuet is essentially a commercial center, developed in the 1970s, filled with strip malls and big box stores. The residential areas are pretty stereotypically suburban. The schools are fairly well rated. The area definitely lacks the charms of Nyack.
West Nyack is not really part of Nyack. It's just the region that lies between Nanuet and Nyack, and it houses the massive behemoth Palisades Mall. Most homes in West Nyack are actually a part of the Clarkstown School District. West Nyack does not have the feel of Nyack.
Thanks havoc, you've been extremely helpful in many of my questions.
