Given the month we are now in, here is a related documentary that I came across from 1968 from National Educational Television, a precursor to PBS, about the black middle class. Some of it is centered around the NYC area and mentions the Catskills and Hamptons, among other vacation spot that some would go to.
Here is another report this time from 1964 by CBS called “Segregation Northern Style”, where a middle class black family has trouble finding a home in many northern NJ communities, but the report also shows the Glenwood Lake neighborhood of New Rochelle as an example of an integrated middle class neighborhood at the time.
This historical documentary from 1963 again by the National Educational Television network(now PBS) mentions Lakeview on Long Island, as it gets into the desegregation of the Malverne SD at around 10 minutes in. It also shows CORE picketing a project in Queens that used minimal amounts of black workers and uses many workers from outside of the state in the beginning.
As some may know, Lakeview is NY State’s blackest community at 72.5% black alone(about 78% inc. those in combo) and has an overall median household income of $146,369. https://data.census.gov/cedsci/profi...00000US3641003
Also, I want to give a shout out to the YouTube channel Hezakya News and Films for most of these historical documentaries that I’ve come across. If you like historical documentaries that touch on a range of topics, it is a good place to look.
