I second the 1000 Islands. I grew up in that region and it is beautiful.

If I were you I would get up first thing in the morning and miss morning traffic, go up 87 into Albany. That would get you there around lunch time, spend 2-3 hours there. Then get back on the road and head up 87 to Lake Placid/Tupper Lake area, tour around there, find a camping ground and pitch a tent for the night. Get up in the morning take RT 3 into Watertown(that would take about an hour and a half) then get on RT 81 and head north to Alexandria Bay. This is the Thousands Islands region, only 30 minutes north of watertown. Get a Uncle Sams boat tour and take it around the Islands, check out Boldt Castle, grab lunch, then get back on the road 81 S and head to Wescotts Beach(this is about 40 minutes from Alex Bay. You can pitch a tent and spend the night there, a lot of people camp there. It is close to a place called Sackets Harbor which is a nice town on the mouth of Lake Ontario. They have a comedy club there which is cool. Get up in the morning head to Syracuse(only a 40 minutes drive from the beach) Spend a few hours there(personally Syracuse doesn't impress me all that much) then get onto 104 and head towards Rochester and travel along Lake Ontario. After that you are on your own, because I have only been to Seabreeze in Rochester, never been to Buffalo, but have been to Niagra Falls. You could tour Rochester then head to the falls and spend the night at the falls. Then get up in the morning check out Buffalo, then loop around and check out the finger lakes then head home after that. That would leave you spending 3 nights on your excusion, saving a good deal of money because you can camp out 2 of the nights. Good luck! if you need anything else fee free to PM me.
