I am still in NC, but the reason I want to move back to New England is due to the culture. I seriously hate cold and snow, but it is better than dealing with the congested (undeveloped road infrastructure), urban sprawl, bad schools, horrible customer service...us northerners like to propose improvements/changes for things not working and we are told to move home if we don't like it. The south is very stubborn to change. This isn't anything new. Between 1890 and 1920 conservatives were called standpaters...the attitude still permeates the culture...good luck to even get people to recycle...that would be too liberal and "socialistic."

Sounds like there might be a slight disagreement about whether or not your proposed change would actually be an improvement.

I guess I have down south too long or you have chosen to live out in Podunk I don't which because you didn't identify your location. Hopefully you find all your worries (except the weather) are resolved by moving back north, many do. Ask yourself what are you looking for and has it changed since you chose to leave? Congestion due to broken roads, volume, weather are going to exist. Urban sprawl is one of my favorites let me ask what is the difference if in traveling 10 miles I remain in the same city or I pass through 3-5 different ones? I still travelled 10 miles... Schools can be good or bad anywhere and no location has cornered the market on this, but you don't like them that's fine. Too often transplants to an area want to change everything to what they are familiar with and locals are reluctant, after all if you wanted everything the way it is back home than why move. I mean reluctance to recycle, how barbaric..

So pack well and think of all the stories you will be able to tell in the spring when you feel it's warm enough to go out and experience quality customer service at your local coffee shop.

Bless You....

Wow, down here in the Charleston area my experience has been just the OPPOSITE, outside of sprawl, which you find in all thriving metro areas. We chose to live in this particular location because of the excellent school system. We have great public works. There are parks everywhere and lots of preservation areas. The roads and highways are smooth and well maintained. And customer service?... Well, they bend over backwards with attention to service and manners... I thought I'd died and gone to heaven the first time my groceries were taken out of the store and put into my car for me. Oh, and we recycle!

I wonder if they go to friends houses and tell them how they should be doing things??

Customer service I've found people treat you like you treat them. So I treat them well and they treat me well. South and North. And West. Oh and East too. So I'm betting this little CS problem is gonna follow them where ever the journey takes them.

I don't blame those people one bit for telling you to move if you do not like it. I'm sure they will not miss you in North Carolina. If you really don't like the culture down there you had no business moving there in the first place. Did it ever occur to you that the people that live there and were living there well before you like things just the way they are? What right do you think you have to go down there as an outsider and try to force your agenda down their throats? You sound like another Liberal elitist who thinks that they know better than any others on how other people should live their lives. If you don't get your way you just throw a hissy fit and insult the people of your adopted state. There are a lot of people living in this country that don't want "change that you can believe in". The results of the last election have proved that.

I moved to Arizona because this is where I belong and to get away from people like you and their smug elitist attitudes. I've had my fill of it, and could not be any happier in my adopted home state. Nothing beats the taste of freedom. Oh, by the way no one has told me to move.

One thing that's notable down here, is you never hear customers openly complaining and causing a fuss in a place of business. Ever. If something is really wrong, they politely deal with it out of earshot. You never see any outrageously rude behavior. I've also not heard a raised voice or inappropriate language in public here even once, no matter the surroundings. And ALL people answer eachother with "Yes, sir/ma'am", No, sir/ma'am", no matter to whom they're speaking. It's refreshingly old fashioned, and a welcome change.

BTW, despite being an old-time Yankee liberal whose blue color will never change, maybe I need to buy myself a pair of spats.

Your description of South Carolina is similar to life out here in Arizona. We do recycle although we do not have to separate our trash. The recyclables are sorted at the facility where the trash is dumped. There are no deposits required on beverage containers either. Complete strangers wave to you on the streets. I'm happy to hear you appreciate your adopted home state in spite of political differences. South Carolina being a "Red" state. It doesn't sound like you are trying to force your agenda on others. That is commendable. Are you sure you are an old-time Yankee Liberal? I have found that the people out here are generally happy because they want to be here and not because they have to be here. Most including myself would not want to live anywhere else and are proud to live in Arizona. You see a lot of people with sweatshirts, tee-shirts, ball caps etc. and front license plates proudly displaying the state flag, name and colors. Something I rarely saw while living in New York other than baseball hats or apparel displaying New York sport's team logo's.
