From what I understand, this is how the Nissan lineup works (along with Toyota and Honda).
subcompact... Versa/Note = Yaris = Fit
compact... Sentra = Corolla = Civic
midsize... Altima = Camry = Accord
full size... Maxima = Avalon = (none for Honda)
The best selling models are the compact or midsize. Just like the Maxima, the Avalon doesn't sell very well either. From what I remember, the Maxima used to be more comparable to the Camry and Accord, and the Altima used to be comparable to the Corolla or Civic.
Probably a better explanation was that the previous Altima generations was bigger than the Corolla/Civic/Sentra, but smaller than the Camry and Accord. And the Maxima was at a premium over the Camry or Accord (similarly equipped). So in the market segment, there was a total void that didn't really work for Nissan USA.
More recently and currently, the Altima has grown in size and appointments to match the Accord and Camry, and it probably works better for Nissan overall, even though the Maxima's market share is smaller.
Avalon is a stretched wheelbase Camry platform, and yes, market segment for that is smaller. Think Chevy Impala, Buick Lacrosse.
It's a Chevy dealership. Of course they want to dump a Nissan. It's a used car.
That has nothing to do with it. Dealers sell other used makes all the time. Market value is market value. Even if it was a Yugo or a Pagani dealership.
When you get into $35K+ range you are in Lexus/Infiniti territory. Avalon has the same problem.
Agree a loaded Avalon is basically the same price as an ES350. The avalon may have a bit more room, but I'd imagine most people would choose the Lexus.

I driven both. Avalon has a really nice floaty feel. ES350 feels like a loaded Camry..just a small notch nicer.
Maxima at 40k plus....that is a tough sell....Nissan isn't exactly commanding those premium
10 years ago I switched to Nissan....and like the energizer bunny , this car has kept going and going. Fewer yearly glitches. It was a toss up between the Maxima and Altima. I chose the altima...
Both got me from A to B safely so that was the primary goal.
While I love the maxima, its too much car ...engine, bells and whistles...

still, something fishy with this deal? Carsdirect.com has a brand new price of a Nissan Maxima Platinum as $36,000 and Edmunds TMV appraisal for a used one with 13k miles came as $35k.
The listed car is $8k below True market value.
PS - found out what is FISHY. This isn't a Platinum...it is a lie. It is a S trim which is much lower price point ($29,600 brand new). Dumbasses. The Platinum has a wood trim all around and different seats.
The biggest issue with the Nissan Maxima these days is people who want to spend less money will get an Altima, and people who want to spend more will get an Infiniti sedan.
