check the battery cable connections at the battery and at the starter and ground to make sure they are all clean and secure.
Years ago I had a MGB that drove me nuts. It sometimes died driving down the road. I would pull over and it would restart and off I would go. After much grief of trying to figure out the problem it turned out to be a bad ground to the frame.
I would hit a bump and jostle it just enough to make the ground disconnect.
In my current custom car I started having an odd problem where if the engine was hot and I went to restart it would act like the battery was near dead. If it stopped and started no problem but if I got gas and it was off for 5 minutes it had a hard time restarting until it cooled down. This turned out to be a common problem with the 5.0 engine and the starter getting too hot. The battery is in the trunk so the "juice" has a long way to travel so I increased the size of the cable and all is now good. It was a cheaper fix then the more common fix of getting a racing high torque starter.
Problems like you are having OP sounds like an ignition electrical problem. They can drive you nutz
Nissans have issues with cam/crankshaft sensors. When they go bad, you get the symptoms you're describing.
Before doing anything, go to an auto parts store that checks codes for free.
I just looked up the xterra crank sensor....i'm praying it isn't, it's at the back of the engine.
I've never had any real trouble with this truck, but it is a total pain to work on
got the codes read, cam sensor, and knock sensor. I'm just hoping the bad cam sensor is setting off the knock sensor too. I really don't feel like tearing apart my whole engine. The cam sensor is bad enough it's built into the distributor, so I have to get a whole new distributor. Should have got a ford
I have a 2001 Nissan xterra v-6 223,000 miles
last sunday I ran a quick errand got back in the car and it took longer than usual to start. a couple of days ago I was driving back from the gas station got to a red light and the car died, cranked but no start. I waited about 5-10 minutes then it fired back up. today a couple of days later drove home went to get some food got back to the car same thing no start waited about half hour then it started again. otherwise the car starts and runs fine. I have been getting a check engine light but it doesn't last more than a day or two but haven't had time to get it checked
I had a fuel pump that went out in exactly that way.
Well I got a new distributor put it in and it wouldn't fire. put the old one back in fire it up. tried the new one with the old cap and rotor nothing. then I put the old one back in again and now it wont start, and i'll get about 2-3 cranks in and get a voooop noise and it stops cranking.
You seem to not be getting fuel. First check is the fuel filter. That's usually an easy check and fix.
Second possibility is fuel pump which is mucho hassle since it is probably in the gas tank.
When you first turn on the ignition you should hear the pump run for a few seconds.
also the alternator and battery are less than a year old
Don't rule out the battery just yet. I was having starting issues earlier this year. My battery was barely a year old, so I was looking everywhere else for problems. Took it into a mechanic... bad battery.
