I know someone in NY who claims she is a WASP - correction: half-WASP (LOL). Do people actually still call themselves WASPS, and if so are they being pretentious? Scholars agree that the group's influence has waned since the end of World War II, with the growing influence of Jews, Catholics, African Americans and other former outsiders. WASPS lost even more control of their once disproportionate social and financial power in the 80s when business interests gained more influence in Congress, and the social fabric of America started to change as entrepreneurs surpassed WASPS in net worth. Today they are a minority in Congress, and my guess is that their wealth is miserly compared to America's new found billionnaires.

What's your insight?

No they don't. They are afraid people will realize how rich they are and kill them.

I've heard people describe others as "waspy" but never heard someone call themselves that.

if somebody is Protestant and of Scandinavian, French, Germanic, Nordic, Dutch, Scotch English or Scotch, Irish Protestant, does this automatically make them a WASP?

i remember i transferred to the public school from a private school back in the late 70's. i visited my new to be guidance counselor with my mom, who described the counselor as a "real WASP". at that time i didn't know what a WASP was but i had heard of it. so i assumed it was anybody with blond hair who doesn't have a NY accent and acts slightly affected, elegant or educated

turned out this counselor was Jewish

My understanding is that to be a WASP, you must be English and Protestant. The Kennedies don't meet these requirements to be considered WASP because they are Catholic. I would apply the term "affected" to the followers of the ruling social elite, such as the WASPS until the 80s when the new rich started to surpass WASPS in social status. I would describe the "affected" as those who immitate the lifestyle, tastes, manners, etc. of the elite. Most likely the "affected" are insecure about their own social class, this includes wanna-be WASPS who are only too proud to call themselves WASPS (worse yet, half-WASP).

I think it meant that segment of the white Anglo-Saxon Protestants who achieved wealth and power. Most of them didn't but the groups that did were called WASPS. Preppy, educated, influential, traditional. I don't know what you call the rest of the white Anglo-Saxon Protestants though. Ordinary folk? Peasants?

did the KKK consider themselves WASPS? the term Ku Klux i think derives from the term "kuklos" which if im not mistaken may mean a circle of Scots (since many were of Scottish ancestry).
