To throw a rock or large nut from the ground near someone (a 6 year old for instance) to try and 'startle' them as a joke? Like if it were thrown really high in the air, and there was a risk of it landing on someone's head if they took a few steps to the right since it was thrown behind their back when they had no idea of what was happening? I'm having a debate about this with someone and I don't think it's a 'joke' when there is a risk of someone getting hurt, especially a small child. Would the mother be 'overprotective' if said rock or nut came within 6 feet of child and the mother in a horrified voice said, "What are you doing!!?" Thoughts?

Common sense would indicate it's stupid to throw anything in the direction of another person. If you are debating this, I'd love to know the other point of view.

I think it's worthy of a "Hey, knock that off!"

The behavior shouldn't be allowed to go on given the small child thing, but neither does it deserve a "horrified" tone, unless said rock is an 8 lb boulder.

I don't know of any "large nuts" (hee hee, sorry) that would weigh as much as anything more than a pebble so that's a big difference.

It's not really nice to startle anyone regardless of age. In my day we'd probably call this "teasing." No one likes being teased.

It's immature at least and probably inappropriate.

I think I learned when I was 8 years old not to throw things at or around people.

No, not appropriate. Someone could have been hurt, therefore, not funny.

It's stupid to do this around any child. If the child turned around at the last minute they could be hit in the face. Why would you want to purposefully harm your kid? Not cool.

Really, OP?
No one should be throwing things at anybody.... unless they are playing dodgeball!

What is this large nut of which you speak?

I'll be the odd man out and say it's no big deal. It didn't hit anyone. Is this on-going behavior or a one time thing?

Was it an adult, or a child?

Say said nut actually hit someone, what's the worst case scenario?
