Umm, well, it depends. I feel like there's a lot of highly unconfrontational people here and I am not at all like that.

First, I wouldn't chase after someone in that case as nothing happened. I would cuss at them or be angry but I would never actually pursue someone, no, that's bordering on asking for trouble.

That being said, would I correct a stranger's behavior in public? Absolutely! And I have many times. Life is full of conflict and the best way to deal with it in my experience is to make sure you're the bigger dog. I don't deal with that or tolerate attitude or behavior or wrong-doing from other people. If it's a bicyclist disobeying laws, they get the horn, they get the finger, and if they try to confront me, I'll get out of my car and ask if they want to tango. I don't care, bring it on, I don't think they want any piece of me to be honest. That would be a bad mistake on their part.

There have been maybe 5 times in my life where I used the phrase, "If you take one more step towards me, it's on, do you want that?" Not one time has anyone taken that step. They always back away and get lost. It's always them in the wrong, too, so that probably helps.

Speaking of correcting people in public, and the above, one time I was shopping with my girlfriend and she said, "Excuse me" as she walked in front of a guy in the aisle looking at soups or whatever. He grumbles loudly, "You can say excuse me, you don't just walk in front of people!" and she said, "I did say excuse me!" and I confirmed, "She said excuse me dude." He starts arguing with us, and I don't take that, I take ZERO backtalk from anyone before they get Angry Jonathan and you really don't want that. I told him to go F himself and get the H out of here. He takes a few steps towards me and I take one towards him and uttered my phrase. He backs away and starts walking and I said, "Yeah that's what I thought! Get the F out of here!"

So when you're correcting someone in public -- because of your bad hearing -- you may want to consider there are nightmare people out there like me who are more than happy to entertain your anger. I have no problems with that. I like yelling back and have never stood down from any confrontation.

I called another man a ##*+£%%]} in an elevator once when he sneezed on me.

Of course, it was in Tokyo, he was Japanese, and he had no idea what I said. He just bowed.

Yes: a little girl barely two years old was toddling out of a set of revolving doors and when she got out, her mother ran behind her and slapped her and said "Where the hell are you going stupid!" I felt compelled to ask her, "How is she supposed to know which way to go when you aren't even holding her hand? And why would you slap her, she doesn't know any better but you should!" I wanted to pick the little girl up and take her home with me! What a total loser that mother was.

Sorry, I don't buy your story at all.

You meet a lot of foreign Asians in Tokyo, especially these days with the shortage of workers.

Japanese sneeze (and cough) into the crook of their elbow, and if they are ill they wear a face mask. Japanese are extremely considerate of others. I doubt seriously that he was 1) Japanese and if he was under 70 that he did not understand what you said to him, since English is (or was) a compulsory subject for high school students in Japan.

Not this resident of Arizona. Do you know how many hair-trigger tempers around here are packing heat?

That is how road rage incidents start out. It just takes one of the two parties to escalate it. There's no way of knowing ahead of time if one of the parties has a weapon, i.e. a gun, their vehicle, a baseball bat, etc.

It's not a new phenomenon. I first witnessed it ca 1977. I was waiting at a bus stop and saw two cars have a near-miss accident. No harm or damage, just a wild swerve. Both cars pulled over and then one driver got out with a baseball bat. The other driver burned rubber and got away.

If no damage is done, best to let things be. For all your friend knew, the other driver could have been reaching into her purse for a gun.

Make sure you have a full tank of gas so you can outrun them if they give chase.
