I have only one -- a neighbor I might need to call in a hurry some day. But I've never needed to.
First phone I ever had, I programmed in some numbers, but I don't think I ever speed-dialed one once. I don't have unlimited LD, but everylne I know does, so they call me. I often wish they'd stop.
I buy the cheapest landline phone I can get, Vtech from WalMart, and it will store numbers with a code for each one, I can just enter it and hit dial. Distinct from a directory, which is just a list of every number you know. Maybe it's an old-fashioned thing that nobody even remembers.
With all the smart phones now, aren't speed dialers a thing of the past?
... for most people, yes.
